Title

Ice Chips

Subject

Heap of ice chips at Coes Pond

Description

Ice chips were a byproduct of natural ice harvesting. Cutting blocks of ice from the surface of the pond, sawing blocks into smaller blocks, and planing dirt from the surface of ice blocks all created large amounts of ice chips. At the end of the harvesting season in 1905, the Walker Ice Company at Coes' pond generated 20,000 tons of ice chips, which formed a huge mound.
